A depiction of 'Mephistopheles'. Although similar in character to 'The Devil' - Satan / Lucifer - of the Anglo Christian faith, Mephistopheles (Mephisto) originates from Germanic folklore and is more considered a messenger of hell rather than its ruler, a broker of infernal contracts in eternal servitude to The Devil.
He is said to possess the magical ability to transform into any mortal creature, intelligent or otherwise; this effect described in the Faustian Legend, whereby Mephistopheles takes the shape of a mundane poodle to infiltrate Faust's home.
Dali has opted to portray Mephisto with exaggerated bestial features - a divergence from the typical, more romanticised masculine form of other renaissance works.
