Salvador Dalí

le pain

Salvador Dalí painted The Basket of Bread (corbeille de pain) in 1926 after leaving formal art classes to demonstrate that he possessed the skills to paint like the traditional art masters. This artwork was followed by Basket of Bread (corbeille de pain) in 1945.

Bread (le pain) is a scarce aquatint print following the 1945 painting.

Dalí painted bread to symbolise life. As a staple food, bread nourishes us to allow us to survive. The symbolisation also reminds us that without food we may stave, resulting in death.

Bread also represents Dalí’s fascination with religion with bread denoting the body of Christ.
