Alice in Wonderland – A mad tea party

In 1969 Salvador Dalí illustrated a limited edition of the classic 1865 novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (commonly referred to as Alice in Wonderland), written by Lewis Carroll.

Dalí’s rendition of the mad tea party contains one of his infamous melting clocks. In Carroll’s fairy tale, the Mad Hatter gets sentenced to death by the Queen of Hearts for ‘murdering time’ as he always spends time drinking tea. Alice joins the Mad Hatter and others for a tea party, periodically changing seats to meet all the attendees. During the tea party, the Mad Hatter recounts riddles and the event is full of nonsense.
