The Chess Room: Where Games are Rarely Won

2025 2D Surrealist Art & Poetry Prize, Peoples' Choice Winner

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

My love of chessboards and pieces are apparent in this painting, stemming from an early fascination with the Alice books. The morphing of the chess board and disintegrating room implying this is not a conventional game with clear rules, or a straightforward conclusion. And maybe the goal isn't victory but something else entirely. Overall, I wanted the painting to portray a sense of endlessness and futility. ...where games are rarely won.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Fereleth Lee. Born in the UK, I came to Australia in 1979 and now reside in Tasmania, I love to paint animals and birds and have written and illustrated a children's book on the collective nouns of animals with a quirky twist. Dali, Magritte and Escher have been my inspiration from my Art College days and am always looking to add a bit of surrealism in my work. I mainly work with acrylics, but am also becoming quite addicted to sculpting in clay.
