ABOUT THE PIECE
This mixed media artwork questions cultural assumptions positioning sport and art as separate or opposing forms of identity and experience. The work brings the familiar language of AFL into an artistic context, drawing on Surrealism’s unexpected juxtapositions and the disruption of everyday logic. Ladders, a recurring motif within Surrealist imagery, suggest escape, aspiration and access to another reality, while in this work they also reference team position and ranking.
The work embraces the idea that seemingly unrelated worlds can coexist.
