In 1969 Salvador Dalí illustrated a limited edition of the classic 1865 novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (commonly referred to as Alice in Wonderland), written by Lewis Carroll.
In Carroll’s fairy tale, the White Rabbit appears after Alice is once again alone after the caucus race. He is looking for his misplaced gloves and fan. The White Rabbit mistakes Alice for a maidservant and asks Alice to fetch them from his house. Alice finds another bottle in the house, which she drinks from, causing her to grow so large that she gets stuck. The White Rabbit and a group of animals then help her by sending in pebbles that transform into cakes, which Alice can eat to return to a normal size. Alice in Wonderland – The rabbit sends in a little bill depicts Alice stuck in the house with her leg out the window.
