Charles Blackman

Charlies Blackman (1928 – 2018) was an Australian artist that painted and drew many artworks based on Lewis Carroll’s 1865 book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In this artwork, Alice is juxtaposed with a cigarette, possibly in reference to the smoking caterpillar from the story whilst commenting on the recognised suggestion in literature that smoking represents rebellion or relaxation. Blackman’s artworks based on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland are thought-provoking, presenting imagery that is based on his own experiences, cultural ideals about reality, and Carroll’s fantasy world.
