Salvador Dalí
gradiva (A Surrealist Sunday)
1964 etching on paper
Gradiva - 'The women who walks through walls' was a move to all surrealists and especially Dali. The muse embodied the exploration of the subconscious and sexual fantasy whilst also echoing themes of mythology, dreams and psychoanalysis. After reading Freuds study, Dali became infatuated with Gradiva. he went to great lengths to say Gala, his wife, was a reincarnation of her. Within Freuds study, 'Delusions and Dreams in Jensen's Gradiva' (1907) he depicts Gradiva as the return of the repressed in relation to the psyche.
