Salvador Dalí
Surrealist Crutches from Memories of Surrealism
1971 lithograph on paper
This lithograph from a series of 175 copies, bursts with colour and Dalí symbolism. The large crutch is shown upwards, indicating that it will provide support in life. Dalí often depicted crutches to symbolise human weakness. Sitting alongside the crutch is a butterfly. It is static in movement, indicating it is placed here for its beauty and for observation. Like many of Dalí’s surrealist artworks, the objects are juxtaposed without immediate relevance and the differing scales designates a dream-like state.
