Salvador Dali

The Last Coming of the Last Planet

Lithographic Print in colour, embossed on Arches Paper. One of six such works as part of Dali's 'Conquest of Cosmos II' suite.

French publisher, Jean Lavigne, commissioned Dali to create a series of etchings based on a theme of his choosing. At the time, Dali had - mostly - departed from studies of mysticism, taking a greater interest in modern science; 'Conquest of the Cosmos' was a reflection of this, drawing inspiration from the space-race between America and Russia.

"Since the launch of the first Soviet satellite into orbit, the great task for the humankind of conquering outer space was laid."

The titular 'last planet' may well have been reference to Pluto. However, some interpreted it to mean the final planet humanity will ever discover, after having explored the universe in its entirely.
